All the inventions man has worked tirelessly to create, this is GSM, or Global System for Mobile Communications, makes us cry of absolute pleasure. The first GSM phone call, placed exactly 20 years ago today, took place in Finland. The conversation was between former Prime Minister Harri Holkeri and Vice Mayor of the Finnish city of Tampere Kaarina Suonio, and it can be seen below. Why GSM is important? There are 4.4 billion people in the world, via 838 networks in 234 countries, uses it to talk, text and in some cases, Facebook and Twitter mutually. There is also the SIM card, which allows anyone to use any compatible device on any network GSM; It is a big problem. We take these things for granted today, but it was serious stuff at the time, if in fact Finland serious hoped that their progress of GSM technology the hoist out of a recession which was rampant in the nation at the time. It did, is Nokia ring a Bell?
"When we have been put in place of the system and creating the first Nokia GSM phone which which would first call very few of us dare dream of the future," said Timo Ali-Vehmas, Vice President of compatibility & industry Collaboration at Nokia. "None of back us then imagined the tremendous impact that GSM would have for the life of billions of people in the world." Course, none of this would been possible without the pioneering work of by so many brilliant minds in the industry over the last twenty years. That work continues today and it's great to see GSM continues to evolve and to many exciting ways to renew. »
With LTE we're pushing the download speeds of 100 Mbit/S, but how fast the GSM networks will go 20 years? Ericsson has already shown off the coast of 1 GB/S speeds in Sweden and they believe that such networks will be launched in 2013. It is only 2 years!
